What’s Weighing You Down?
As we journey through life, we gather people and possessions that bring us joy—and naturally, we get attached. Family, friends, clothes, shoes, favorite foods… all the things we hold close. But how often do we pause to consider what might be weighing us down?
Sometimes, the very things that once supported us no longer serve us in the same way.
Recently, my son—who’s preparing for college this fall—asked for help cleaning out his room. When my kids were younger, I’d do a yearly sweep: out with the old clothes, shoes, books, and toys. But it had been a few years since our last deep clean, and you can imagine the clutter. Outgrown clothes, forgotten knick-knacks, and childhood action figures sitting quietly, untouched. I couldn’t help but think of Toy Story—and the bittersweet moment when Woody and Buzz were left behind.
Thankfully, my son’s aunt stepped in to help. She’s gifted with the art of organization, and after two days of rearranging furniture and sorting through memories, I realized something important: we don’t always take the time to declutter our homes—or our lives. And that imbalance can sneak up on us.
This isn’t just about tidying up a room. It’s about relationships, food habits, attitudes, and even work schedules. When clutter builds up in these areas, we lose direction. Anxiety creeps in. Sleep becomes restless. Life feels chaotic.
Let me explain:
- When we surround ourselves with people who have unhealthy habits, it can affect our own well-being.
- A messy home can stir up anxiety—“What do I do with all this stuff?”—and that stress can disrupt our sleep.
- Poor food habits, like overeating or constantly feeling unsatisfied, often stem from unresolved emotions or past trauma.
- Overextending ourselves at work can leave us feeling drained, overlooked, and unhappy.
All of these things, if left unchecked, can weigh us down.
So here are a few gentle reminders:
- You’re not meant to please everyone. Prioritize your time and energy.
- Don’t overcommit your schedule. Make space for peace.
- Let go of what no longer serves you—physically, emotionally, relationally.
- Set boundaries. Don’t say yes to everything. Remember: “No” is a complete sentence.
- Tune into your emotions around food. Journaling can help you identify triggers and make healthier choices.
- Create order in your home—and enjoy the restful sleep you deserve.
- Above all, nurture a flow of peace in your life. Balance matters. YOU matter.
📖 Scripture for Encouragement:
- Boundaries – Proverbs 4:23: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
- Self-Control with Food – Galatians 5:23: A reminder to practice moderation in all things.
- Healthy Friendships – Proverbs 17:17 and Philippians 4:5: Embrace a gentle disposition and cherish loyal relationships.
- A Peaceful Home – Proverbs 24:3–4: “By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established.”
Well, I guess it’s time for me to get back to cleaning my own house!
Until next time—stay happy, stay healthy, and keep rekindling your joy.
Love,
Jen
